Schumann's Salon | Jewish music from 1000 years

31.01.2026
19:00 - 20:30

What is Jewish music?
The internationally renowned guitarist Lucian Plessner explores this question in an introductory lecture and then performs a concert featuring Jewish composers from the past 1000 years, of Sephardic and Ashkenazi origin, outlining their contribution to the high culture of our world through words and music.

After completing his studies, Lucian Plessner lived in Spain for five years, where he was invited by a concert agency to tour as the first foreign concert guitarist. Leonard Bernstein became aware of him and encouraged him to arrange his music for the guitar. With this programme, Lucian Plessner performed worldwide, from Hong Kong to San Francisco. He developed his Spanish concert repertoire with pianist Alicia de Larrocha, gave a concert for Yehudi Menuhin and made several guest appearances with Klaus Maria Brandauer. With the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, he performed his arrangement of Suite from West Side Story, which was created at the suggestion of the Leonard Bernstein Office NYC, during the Leonard Bernstein anniversary year 2018/19.

Over the past two years, Lucian Plessner has made repeated guest appearances in Istanbul, Mexico City, at the Instituto Monte Sinai, the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia and the Conservatorio Nacional de Mexico, as well as again in the USA in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
